Supplementing During Pregnancy – Your Most Asked Questions

When is the best time to take folic acid during pregnancy?

Folic acid or folate is crucial for preventing neural tube defects in the first 12 weeks of pregnancy. Ideally though, start taking this 3 months before conception to ensure sufficient stores in your body when pregnancy begins. However, do note that folic acid can be less bioavailable, so consider methyl folate or folinic acid for better absorption. Taking it in the morning with your breakfast will help to optimise absorption. Look for a prenatal supplement that contains either methyl folate or folinic acid to meet the recommended minimum requirement. Aim to supplement your diet further by consuming 1-2 portions of dark green leafy veg too and plenty of wholegrains, legumes and nuts/seeds.

Which pregnacare is best during pregnancy?

Pregnacare max is probably best during pregnancy but there are much better pregnancy supplements on the market now so I would consider looking at alternative options. Whilst it does contain the DHA which supports babies brain development, it does not contain the EPA found in omega 3, which supports mums health. It's worth mentioning that Pregnacare does contain fillers and binders such as maltodextrin, bulking agents including microcrystalline cellulose and tablet coatings including hydroxypropylmethylcellulose, colours for example, calcium carbonate, iron oxide yellow & copper chlorophyllin, polydextrose and anti-caking agents such as silicon dioxide, stearic acid & magnesium stearate. What's more, some of the forms of nutrients are not as well tolerated as other forms, for example calcium carbonate and magnesium oxide.

Best collagen to take while pregnant?

While collagen itself isn't inherently unsafe during pregnancy, it should be considered carefully when pregnant. Some studies suggest collagen peptides might interfere with the breakdown of tryptophan, a precursor to serotonin.  Serotonin plays a role in mood regulation and gut function, both important during pregnancy.  Do speak to your doctor or a registered nutritional therapist before taking collagen supplements, especially if you experience low mood, are taking antidepressants or suffer with digestive issues. As a safe alternative, consider consuming bone broths to increase your collagen intake in pregnancy instead of taking collagen supplements.

Best vitamins for early pregnancy?

During early pregnancy, the recommendation is to supplement at least 400mcg folate (folic acid). On top of this, we should also consider our nutrient status of all B vitamins including B6 and B12, vitamin D, iron, iodine, selenium, magnesium and choline. A recent study highlighted that as many as 9 in 10 women are deficient in some of these key nutrients. I love EQUI Pregnancy Formula, which has the added bonus of ginger to help with early pregnancy nausea. On top of this, I would recommend considering an omega 3 supplement such as Pregnancy Oil Edition or Bare Biology’s Life & Soul.
