If you've ever stood in the supplement aisle wondering whether protein powder is actually worth adding to your fertility journey, you're definitely not alone.

Protein is one of the nutrients I talk about most in clinic because it's essential for hormone production, egg health, blood sugar balance and keeping you feeling fuller for longer. But when it comes to protein powders, there can be a lot of confusion about which ones to choose and whether they're appropriate when you're trying to conceive.

The good news? You don't need a protein powder to support fertility, but it can be a really helpful addition if you're struggling to meet your protein needs through food alone or simply want a quick, convenient breakfast.

These Chocolate Protein Blended Oats are one of my favourite make-ahead breakfasts. They're rich, chocolatey, naturally sweetened and packed with nourishing ingredients. When served with Greek yoghurt and a little extra nut butter, each portion provides around 30g of protein alongside 6g of fibre - a combination that supports balanced blood sugar, sustained energy and keeps you satisfied throughout the morning.

Perfect for busy weekdays or meal prep, they're a simple way to make breakfast work harder for you.

Why protein matters when trying to conceive

Getting enough protein throughout the day can help to:

  • Support hormone production.

  • Provide amino acids needed for healthy eggs and reproductive tissues.

  • Promote stable blood sugar levels, which is particularly important for conditions such as PCOS.

  • Keep you feeling fuller for longer, reducing energy dips and cravings.

  • Support muscle health and overall wellbeing.

Rather than aiming for one large serving, I always encourage spreading protein across your meals where possible.

Fertility-friendly protein powder options

If you're looking for a protein powder, these are some of the options I regularly recommend depending on your individual needs:

Remember, there isn't one "perfect" protein powder. The best option depends on your dietary preferences, digestive health and overall nutrition goals.

Chocolate Protein Blended Oats

Serves: 3

Per serving (with Greek yoghurt & nut butter):

  • Protein: Approximately 30g

  • Fibre: Approximately 6g

Ingredients

  • Coconut oil, for greasing

  • 120g oats

  • 270ml milk of choice

  • 50g maple syrup

  • 2 eggs

  • Pinch of sea salt

  • ½ heaped teaspoon (2g) baking powder

  • 40g chocolate protein powder

  • 50g peanut butter

  • 15g chocolate chips

To serve

  • 3 tablespoons Greek yoghurt

  • 1 teaspoon nut butter

Method

  1. Preheat your oven to 175°C and lightly grease four ovenproof jars or ramekins with coconut oil.

  2. Add the oats, milk, maple syrup, eggs, sea salt, baking powder, chocolate protein powder and peanut butter to a blender.

  3. Blend until completely smooth, around one minute.

  4. Divide the mixture evenly between the prepared jars.

  5. Sprinkle the chocolate chips over the top.

  6. Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until the centres are set and a skewer inserted comes out clean.

  7. Allow to cool slightly before serving with Greek yoghurt and an extra teaspoon of nut butter.

Nutrition tip

Pairing carbohydrates from oats with protein and healthy fats helps slow the release of glucose into the bloodstream, supporting steadier energy levels throughout the morning.

It's a simple combination that can make a real difference to satiety and overall blood sugar balance.
