Normal Things I No Longer Buy in the Supermarket (and What I Choose Instead)

When it comes to supporting our hormones and overall health, it’s often the small, everyday swaps that can make the biggest difference. This isn’t about perfection or restriction, it’s about becoming a little more conscious of what we’re bringing into our homes, and where possible, choosing options that better support our bodies. Over the years, these are some of the “normal” things I’ve moved away from… and what I tend to choose instead.
1. Non-Organic Berries → Organic Frozen Berries
Berries are one of the highest pesticide-containing fruits, so I tend to buy them organic where possible. Frozen organic berries are a really easy, more affordable option, especially out of season. For 25% off Pack’d frozen organic berries, use code JEN25 (min purchase of £40, one use per customer only).
2. Waxed Citrus → Organic Lemons & Limes
Citrus fruits can be treated with both pesticides and fungicides, and these can still be present on the skin. If I’m juicing or zesting, I always opt for organic.
3. Conventional Oat Milk → Cleaner Ingredient Alternatives
Some oat milks (especially barista versions) contain added oils like rapeseed oil. I tend to choose more minimal, organic options such as Plenish.
4. Non-Organic Milk → Organic or Jersey Milk
Organic milk is free from added hormones and antibiotics and often has a better nutrient profile. Jersey milk can also be a great option, as it contains A2 casein, which may be gentler for some.
5. Processed Meats with Nitrates → Nitrate-Free Options
Bacon and sausages often contain nitrates and nitrites as preservatives. Choosing nitrate-free versions means you can still enjoy them, just in a more supportive way.
6. Conventional Bread → Organic or Wild-Farmed Bread
Wheat is often heavily sprayed, and bread has recently been highlighted for this. Where possible, I opt for organic or wild-farmed sourdough.
7. Tinned Tomatoes (with BPA lining) → Glass or Fresh
Many tins are lined with BPA-containing materials. I prefer fresh tomatoes or passata in glass jars, or trusted organic brands like Mr Organic.
8. Conventional Toothpaste & Mouthwash → Microbiome-Friendly Options
Many products contain SLS or antibacterial agents that can disrupt the oral microbiome. I choose gentler options like Risewell (JENWALPOLE10 gets you 10% off) and support this with simple practices like tongue scraping.
9. Conventional Deodorant → Natural Alternatives
Many deodorants contain aluminium, parabens and synthetic fragrances, which can act as endocrine disruptors. I personally love Wild as a more natural option (code JENNIFER20WILD gets you 20% off).
10. Conventional Cleaning Products → Non-Toxic Alternatives
We’re exposed to these daily, so it’s an easy place to reduce toxic load. Brands like Bower Collective and DIP make this much easier now.
11. Conventional Tampons → Organic Period Products
Cotton is one of the most heavily sprayed crops. Switching to organic options like TOTM can help reduce exposure (JEN30 for 30% off).
A Gentle Reminder
This isn’t about doing everything at once. It’s about small, manageable changes that feel realistic for you, whether that’s starting with your berries, your milk, or your cleaning products. Over time, these swaps can help to reduce your overall toxic load and better support your hormones, fertility and long-term health.
