When you're navigating life with a newborn, having nourishing snacks on hand can make all the difference. Between feeds, naps, and everything else that comes with caring for a little one, finding time to prepare balanced meals isn't always easy.
These simple lactation cookies are one of my favourite make-ahead snacks for new mums. Made with oats, flaxseed, almond flour and dark chocolate chips, they're soft, satisfying and packed with ingredients that can help support your energy needs during the postpartum period.
While no single food can magically increase milk supply, including nutrient-dense energy-rich foods like oats can help support overall nourishment while breastfeeding. These cookies are a delicious way to do just that.

The Key Ingredients
Oats
Oats are a popular ingredient in many lactation recipes for good reason. They're a great source of fibre and slow-releasing carbohydrates, helping to provide sustained energy throughout the day to meet additional energy needs during breastfeeding.
Ground Flaxseed
Flaxseed adds fibre, healthy fats and a subtle nutty flavour. It's an easy way to boost the nutritional value of homemade snacks.
Almond Flour
Almond flour contributes protein, healthy fats and a lovely soft texture to these cookies.
Dark Chocolate Chips
Because every nourishing snack should also be enjoyable. The dark chocolate adds just the right amount of sweetness and indulgence.
Lactation Cookies Recipe
Makes approximately 12 cookies
Ingredients
2 tbsp (15g) ground flaxseed
⅓ cup (74ml) coconut oil, softened
100g maple syrup
½ tsp vanilla extract
175g oats
75g almond flour
40g oat flour
2 eggs
½ tsp cinnamon
½ tsp baking powder
Pinch of sea salt
75g dark chocolate chips
Method
Preheat the oven to 175°C (350°F) and line a baking tray with baking paper.
In a large mixing bowl, combine the softened coconut oil and maple syrup.
Add the oats, almond flour, oat flour, cinnamon, baking powder, vanilla extract, flaxseed and sea salt. Mix until well combined.
Fold through the dark chocolate chips.
Roll the mixture into balls approximately 3-4cm in diameter and place on the prepared baking tray.
Gently flatten each ball into a cookie shape.
Bake for 15 minutes or until lightly golden on the bottom.
Allow the cookies to rest on the tray for 5 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.
Serving Suggestions
For a more balanced snack or for a breakfast option, pair your cookies with:
Greek yoghurt for additional protein
Fresh berries for fibre and antioxidants
A spoonful of nut butter for healthy fats and extra satiety
This combination can help keep you feeling fuller for longer and provide a more substantial snack between meals.
Storage Tips
These cookies are delicious straight from the fridge and can be stored in an airtight container for up to 5 days. They're also freezer-friendly, making them ideal for batch preparation before baby's arrival or during those early postpartum weeks.
Having nourishing snacks ready to grab can be one small way to make life feel a little easier during the busy season of motherhood. These lactation cookies are simple, satisfying and perfect for keeping on hand whenever hunger strikes.
